Cybersecurity: Protecting Your Business Against Phishing Schemes

With over 90% of malware being delivered globally via e-mail it is important to know how to recognize and deal with phishing scams. While you or other employees might click on an email in good faith, it could pose a financial risk to your business. Phishing has become very sophisticated and almost undetectable, as criminals have found ways to make their emails as realistic as possible. Security awareness training and phishing simulations go hand in hand.

Phishing simulations test employees on how they would respond to a real-life phishing attack. Gettry Marcus’ strategic relationship with Total Technology Solutions (“Total Solutions”) allows us to take a proactive approach in protecting ourselves against such attacks. Total Solutions can send mock phishing attacks at staggered times, avoiding the “prairie dog effect” where employees warn one another of the email, for the best measurement of all employees’ awareness. They can further track which employees have clicked on a phishing email, who has given away their password, and who has ignored the email.

Tips for Detecting a Phishing Email

  1. Watch for overly generic content and greetings
  2. Examine the entire from email address
  3. Look for urgency or demanding actions
  4. Carefully check all links
  5. Notice misspellings, incorrect grammar and odd phrasing
